Dance levels
Level I, 2 left feet aka: Beginner= Every great dancer started here, yes, including me. Maybe you were the best cheerleader, gymnast, football player or soccer player but you feel you have no rhythm or coordination in dance. Perhaps, you’ve never danced before and are ready to take your first steps. Specifically, for this type of woman or man, private lessons or group classes over a period of a few months or year should help build those important dance elements that define a beginner. These include A. basic coordination B. basic turns and movement patterns C. good leader or follow connection D. an understanding of timing (even if not able to dance to faster music) & E. a basic sense of style (no bouncing, no jumpiness, smoothness instead)
Level II The Intermediate Dancer- Either you have taken a few months or more of dance already OR you have a natural aptitude for dance. You can do much more than the beginner by varying your turns, matching the ‘ musical highs & lows in a song with your moves (called ‘hits’), want more practice, want to learn more patterns, and continue the fun! Your timing is impeccable, you are able to match the speed of the song whether fast or slow every time. You have mastered the art of ‘thinking ahead’ and constantly offer fresh new experiences to those whom you dance with.
Level III-the performer- Some perform for fun some perform to compete and eventually share a stage at a Salsa Congress. Either way, this type of dancer has discipline. They not only attend weekly or bi-weekly classes, they are quick to go out to practice ‘their stuff’ continually looking to learn new things.
